Why the best creative works starts with better questions

Why the best creative works starts with better questions

I'm Sylvie, the Head of Design at Starbots Creative, and I recently spent the day at Birmingham Design Festival, returning with plenty to share.

Events like this aren't only about finding visual inspiration. They're a chance to step back from the work in front of us and reflect on how we work, why we make the choices we do and how design can create stronger outcomes for our clients.

The theme for this year’s event was Change, exploring how every area of design can have an impact socially, economically and within our own lives.

Three things in particular have stuck with me.

My key takeaways

Design isn’t decoration, it’s part of the solution

Design is often seen as the final layer, but its real value comes much earlier. It helps make complex products understandable, gives shape to abstract ideas and creates consistent ways for brands to communicate.

Through animation and product visualisation, we help clients simplify complex products and communicate their value more clearly to their audience.

Where does meaning live?

One of the talks that most influenced my thinking was 'Between Truth and Fiction' by Pentagram partner Samar Maakaroun. Her team creates brands that work across multiple languages and cultures, and rather than focusing on differences, they look for shared meaning and build flexible visual systems around those common threads.

One of her questions stayed with me:

Can AI ever understand what makes something meaningful?

Meaning comes from lived experience and the way people interpret the world. AI is a valuable tool, but it doesn’t bring its own experiences or emotional understanding to the table.

We've explored that gap in more detail in our previous journal Prompt vs Personality: Why an AI logo will only get you so far.

Our role as designers is to provide that human perspective: understanding what motivates people and creating work that genuinely connects. That means looking beyond the obvious, questioning convention and finding ideas that resonate on a deeper level.

Matching your ambition

My role is about asking questions that help the team arrive at stronger, more creative solutions. Questions such as: Why does this matter? Why now? How will people actually experience it? From there, we can look at whether an idea can be stripped back and rebuilt in a way that feels more intentional and meaningful.

As a creative team, we’re constantly learning, evolving and challenging how we think so that the work we deliver never becomes predictable or stale. And in my experience, the best outcomes usually happen when clients are willing to take a creative risk with us.

So, bring us your ambition, and we’ll help you push it further.
